M'Lis Bartlett serves as a Lecturer III in the Program in the Environment within the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan. With over 25 years of experience as an urban environmental educator, activist, artist, and researcher across New York City, Detroit, and Flint, Michigan communities, she focuses on building ethical partnerships between academic institutions and local populations through place-based education frameworks that integrate social justice principles.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan
- MLA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan
- BS from Oberlin College
Her research centers on participatory design methodologies and community-based participatory research approaches to environmental education, particularly examining how urban spaces can be co-created through inclusive processes. Previously, she directed the Friends of the High School for Environmental Studies in NYC, where she managed city-wide teen internship programs and developed teacher training curricula for environmental issue integration across academic subjects.
