Lúcia Nagib is a faculty member in the Department of Film, Theatre & Television at the University of Reading, where she leads innovative research on Brazilian cinema through intermedial and transnational perspectives. Her work bridges academic scholarship with creative practice and international collaboration, particularly between the UK and Brazil.
Her research focuses on the interplay between cinema and other art forms such as music, theatre, and visual arts throughout Brazilian film history. She developed the IntermIdia project—a three-and-a-half-year collaborative initiative funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP)—which reconstructs the history of Brazilian cinema by analyzing its dialogue with adjacent media. This approach has offered a non-hierarchical, culturally rich understanding of national cinema, examining periods such as 1930s Samba-influenced films, 1950s theatre-cinema intersections, and the Cinema Novo and Tropicália movements.
The IntermIdia project has had significant educational impact, inspiring a third-year undergraduate module titled World Cinema and Intermediality and enabling students to restage silent movie prologues from 1920s Brazil. These performances, based on recovered scripts translated into English, were integrated into degree programming at Reading’s Minghella Studios and enhanced audience engagement with silent film culture.
Lúcia Nagib’s research has also strengthened institutional ties between the University of Reading and the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCAR), fostering academic exchange and attracting seven Brazilian PhD students to pursue research at Reading. Her work exemplifies how collaborative, interdisciplinary projects can transform both scholarly discourse and teaching practice in film studies.
