Lynn Dustin

Professor Lynn Dustin serves as Professor of Immunology and Virology at the University of Oxford, based at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology within the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences (NDORMS). Her research program focuses on the intersection of viral pathogenesis and autoimmune mechanisms, with particular emphasis on B cell biology and antibody-mediated disorders.

Her research spans Immunology, Virology, and Autoimmunity, investigating critical pathways including:

• Ro60/TRIM21-mediated RNA processing in inflammatory diseases
• Memory B cell dysregulation in neurological autoimmunity
• Therapeutic applications of non-neutralizing antibodies
• Mechanisms of viral immune evasion

Current work examines pathogenic memory B cells in CASPR2-antibody encephalitis and escape-resistant antibody responses against evolving viral threats.

Recent publications (2021-2025) reveal a cohesive research trajectory exploring how viral infections trigger or exacerbate autoimmune conditions through molecular mimicry and defective immune checkpoints. Her work bridges fundamental virology with clinical immunology, particularly in rheumatic diseases and neurological autoimmunity, while advancing therapeutic strategies targeting antibody functions beyond neutralization.

Professor Dustin leads the "Dustin, L Group" focused on Viral Infection and Immunity at the Kennedy Institute, contributing to Oxford's leadership in musculoskeletal and immune-mediated disease research through mechanistic studies of autoantigens, viral pathogenesis, and B cell tolerance.
