Lydia Olander serves as Adjunct Professor in Environmental Social Systems at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment and Program Director at the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability. She specializes in ecosystem services, environmental policy, and climate change mitigation, with particular focus on coastal restoration and natural capital accounting.
Her research interests center on integrating ecosystem services into federal decision-making processes, advancing nature-based solutions for climate resilience, and developing frameworks for environmental markets. She leads the National Ecosystem Services Partnership and contributes to Duke's Climate Commitment action team, emphasizing evidence-based policy and multi-benefit environmental strategies.
Recent publications demonstrate expertise in coastal ecosystem services valuation (2025), socio-economic monitoring of restoration projects (2024), and living shoreline permitting solutions (2024). Her work combines environmental economics with practical implementation challenges, particularly relevant to federal policy updates like US Office of Management and Budget Circular A-4.
Grants include Atlantic Conservation Coalition implementation (2024-2029), Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (2023-2028), and MoTIVES military base land-use modeling (2022-2027). She also leads innovative projects on high-resolution coastal mapping and national nature statistical bureau development.
