Prof. Dr. Dr. hc Lutz H. Gade is Chair of Inorganic Chemistry III and Director of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Heidelberg's Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Bonn and Technische Universität München, followed by a PhD at Cambridge University under Nobel laureate Lord Jack Lewis. After postdoctoral work at the University of Würzburg (habilitation in 1996) and a professorship at Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg), he joined Heidelberg in 2003, where he served as Dean and led Collaborative Research Centers SFB 623 (molecular catalysis) and SFB 1249 (N-heteropolycycles).
His research spans organometallic chemistry, asymmetric catalysis, functional dyes, and surface science, focusing on stereoselective transformations, molecular materials, and nanoscale surface architectures. Key innovations include chiral pincer catalysts for enantioselective synthesis and N-heteropolycyclic materials for optoelectronics.
Scientific awards and honors include:
- Honorary Doctorate, Université de Montpellier (2025)
- Member, Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities
- Member, Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz
- Prix Franco-Allemand de la SCF (2017)
- Lewis Lecturer distinction
He directs a research group of 14+ members and has supervised over 60 PhD/MSc theses. Major grants include leadership of CRC 1249 (2017-2028) exploring functional N-heteropolycycles. His lab maintains advanced facilities for organometallic synthesis, surface characterization, and catalysis studies.
