Luma Mantilla Garino is a Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Gender Studies, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Their LSE-funded PhD, initiated in 2020, examines political subjectivation processes and epistemic registers of disidencias sexo-genéricas (sex-gender dissidences) in Quito, Ecuador, and broader Abya Yala/Latinoamérica. Supervised by Dr. Leticia Sabsay and Dr. Sumi Madhok, their work explores themes such as (dis)identification, Whiteness/mestizaje, aesthetics, memory, and anti-productivist activisms.
Education includes a Master of Arts in Social Policy from Sciences Po Paris and a Bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University. Key expertise spans counter-normative sexualities, transnational migration studies, and decolonizing academia. Luma contributes to the ‘Engenderings’ editorial collective and engages with Latin American marika/cuir/dissident movements.
Research interests further encompass perreo, elite studies, and the intersection of affect and political transversality. No academic awards are listed, but their interdisciplinary approach bridges gender studies, anti-colonial theory, and critical migration discourse.
