Dr. Lulu Liu is an Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Birmingham, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Department of Civil Engineering. She joined the university in 2024 after a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) from 2021 to 2024. She holds a PhD in Structural Engineering from Southeast University (2021), an MEng (2016), and a BEng (2013) in Civil Engineering.
Her research focuses on advancing fiber-polymer composites for structural applications, emphasizing material resistance, ductility, fatigue, and durability at multiple levels. Key areas include composite reuse, additive manufacturing in structures (e.g., wind turbine blades, bridge decks), and fatigue-creep-temperature interactions. Her work combines experimental and numerical methods to address challenges in structural integrity and sustainability.
Recent publications highlight her contributions to fatigue life prediction in viscoelastic materials, tension-tension fatigue behavior of composite joints, and vibration control systems. She currently oversees PhD scholarships for candidates exploring fiber-polymer composites and structural engineering applications.
