Dr Luke Roberts is a Senior Lecturer in Modern Poetry at King's College London's Department of English, within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. He joined King's in 2016 after completing a BA and PhD at the University of Cambridge and an MA at Birkbeck College. His research explores 20th and 21st century poetry through lenses of political commitment, social history, and bibliographic studies. Recent projects include a monograph on Barry MacSweeney and investigations into poetry's relationship with institutions like prisons and police. He co-edited Certain Prose of the English Intelligencer (2012), focusing on 1960s Cambridge poetics debates. His teaching covers Poetry and Poetics, Modernism, and Contemporary Writing.
Research interests span poetry's intersections with left-wing politics, psychoanalysis, queer theory, and Marxism. He emphasizes recovering marginalized writers and contexts, such as John Wieners' queer lyricism and Bill Griffiths' prison writings. He supervises PhD students on 20th/21st century poetry and social/political contexts. His work often involves archival research and independent press collaborations. Though no personal awards are listed, he co-announced the Cosmo Davenport-Hines Poetry Prize in 2017. His publications include monographs, edited volumes, and TLS critiques, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to literary studies.
