Luke Elson is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Reading's Department of Philosophy. He holds additional roles as Deputy Treasurer of the Mind Association and 'Cybersmith' (website manager) for the British Society for Ethical Theory. His research focuses on metaethical and normative issues, including incomplete preferences, imprecise credences, and value incommensurability. He also explores global normative nihilism and its metaphysical implications, alongside recent interests in environmental ethics.
Elson's work challenges traditional moral error theory by advocating for a radical conceptual simplicity in nihilism while addressing 'companions in guilt' critiques. His research bridges metaethical debates with practical ethical concerns, particularly in environmental contexts. Despite the nihilistic framework, he argues such views need not eliminate motivational or subjective concerns entirely.
