Luke D. Trusel is an Associate Professor of Geography at Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) and the Penn State Ice and Climate Research Center (PSICE). He directs the CryoLab unit, focusing on ice sheet dynamics and climate change impacts. Trusel's research integrates remote sensing, ice core data, and climate models to study surface mass balance, hydrological processes, and ice-ocean-atmosphere interactions in Antarctica and Greenland. His work addresses how these systems respond to historical and future climate scenarios, with recent findings highlighting unprecedented ice sheet melting and ice shelf vulnerability.
Trusel earned his PhD in Geography from Clark University (2014) and held prior roles at Rowan University and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. His research is funded by NSF and NASA, with publications in Nature journals and media coverage in The New York Times and National Geographic. He leads projects like ISMIP7 and ISMIP6, focusing on ice sheet modeling and sea level projections. Current research priorities include supraglacial lake monitoring via deep learning and understanding atmospheric river impacts on Antarctic climate.
His lab seeks graduate students with expertise in remote sensing, machine learning, and ice sheet dynamics. Ongoing work includes funded projects on NASA’s Cryospheric Science Program and contributions to the Ice Sheet Model Intercomparison Project (ISMIP7).
