Luke Bowman

Luke Bowman is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences at Michigan Technological University. He serves as Graduate Program Director and Safety Officer for the department, with research focusing on the intersection of geology, natural hazards, and societal impacts.

Bowman received his educational training at Michigan Technological University, where he earned both his PhD and MS in Geology. His undergraduate degree is from Hanover College.

Dr. Bowman's research interests center around the social dimensions of natural hazards, particularly volcanic hazards and disaster risk reduction. He has conducted extensive work in Central and South America, focusing on community engagement in hazard assessment and mitigation. His interdisciplinary approach combines geological science with social science to better understand and address the human dimensions of geological hazards.

His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on geological hazards, climate change impacts, and community-based approaches to risk reduction. Bowman has increasingly incorporated machine learning and advanced modeling techniques into his work, while maintaining a strong emphasis on community engagement and international collaboration, particularly with communities in El Salvador and Ecuador.

Luke Bowman has been involved in significant research funding, notably as a Co-Principal Investigator on the IRES Track III project focused on Coupling Participatory and Hydrological Research for Adapting to Extreme Hydrometeorological Events in Agricultural Communities in El Salvador. This project exemplifies his commitment to integrating scientific research with community needs and local knowledge.

He has presented his work at international venues, including the Geoscience and Society Summit in Stockholm, Sweden, where he shared insights on multidisciplinary, international geological hazards research experiences as part of a multi-year effort to articulate the roles of geoscientists in solving 21st Century challenges and reaching the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
