Lukas van den Berge is an Assistant Professor of Legal Theory at Utrecht University, affiliated with the Utrecht University School of Law's Institute of Constitutional, Administrative Law and Legal Theory. He holds a PhD from Utrecht University (2016) and previously served as an Assistant Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His research focuses on legal theory, administrative law, and the intersection of law with political philosophy and intellectual history, addressing modern societal challenges like climate change and democratic fragility.
Van den Berge has contributed significantly to Dutch administrative law through works like Responsief bestuursrecht, advocating for citizen-centric legal frameworks. His research also explores ancient concepts (e.g., Greek nomos and Roman legal personhood) and their modern implications. He has received accolades, including the VAR-Michiel Scheltema Prijs honorable mention (2023) and Utrecht University's Honours Teacher of the Year (2024).
He currently serves on the board of Utrecht Law College, chairs the university's Central Electoral Office, and edits the Netherlands Journal of Legal Philosophy.
