Luisa Schneider

Luisa Schneider is Assistant Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in intimacy, violence, and law. Her research spans Sierra Leone (since 2011) and Germany (since 2018), examining:

• Frictions between state regulations and intimate needs
• Houselessness and state-dependent rights
• Prison-seeking as survival strategy
• Methodological ethics in anthropology

Current projects include NWO-funded studies on legal-intimate divides and ERC collaborations on urban marginality. Awards include VU's Best Social Science Researcher (2022) and RAI/Sutasoma Award (2018). Publications analyze:

• Homeless privacy rights during COVID-19
• Carceral temporalities in Germany
• Post-conflict intimacy mediation

Teaches ethnographic methods, diversity, and urban challenges while supervising five PhD candidates. Leads academic citizenship initiatives and the Anthropology Honors Program.
