Luis Gomez-Agustina is a Senior Lecturer in Civil and Building Services Engineering at London South Bank University (LSBU), specializing in acoustics and noise control. He holds a BEng (Hons) in Telecommunications Engineering from 1993-1997, a Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control (1999-2000), and an MSc in Environmental & Architectural Acoustics (2004-2005). He completed a PhD on voice alarm (VA) system design in underground railways, winning the IOA Peter Barnett Student Award 2013.
His research focuses on acoustics engineering with emphasis on noise reduction in home appliances (Dyson R&D), VA system optimization for emergency communication in underground transport, hydrogen ignition safety analysis, heliport noise impact assessments, and integrating acoustic education into music and architecture curricula. He has authored/co-authored over 40 publications and reviews for journals like Applied Acoustics and Building and Environment.
As course director for the IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control and Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurements, he promotes acoustic training through apprenticeships and academic programs. He advises PhD research on ventilation duct acoustics and lecture capture sound quality metrics. Additional roles include external examiner for University of Derby’s MSc Applied Acoustics and member of the IOA Education and London Branch committees.
His work aligns with UN SDGs through contributions to sustainable urban development via noise mitigation and advancing technical education standards.
