Luis Ceferino serves as Assistant Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley's College of Engineering, joining in 2024 after appointments at New York University (2021-2023) and Princeton University.
Education:
- Ph.D., Structural Engineering, Stanford University, 2019
- M.S., Structural Engineering, Stanford University, 2014
- B.S., Civil Engineering, Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería, Lima, Peru, 2011
Research Interests: His work centers on multi-hazard risk analysis and urban resilience through rigorous structural modeling, uncertainty quantification, and machine learning. The Disaster Risk Analysis Lab investigates earthquake, hurricane, and flood impacts on critical infrastructure systems while developing climate adaptation strategies for cities facing increasing disaster severity.
Scientific Awards:
- Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow at Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, Princeton University
Advising and Grants: Leads international teams with environmental/civil engineers and public health researchers, conducting World Bank-funded infrastructure risk assessments across the United States, Nepal, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic, and Peru. Performs post-disaster reconnaissance including the 2016 Ecuador Earthquake, 2022 Hurricane Ian, and 2023 Turkey-Syria Earthquake.
Labs and Teams: Directs the Disaster Risk Analysis Lab focused on extending catastrophe modeling capabilities through interdisciplinary collaboration to transform urban disaster risk understanding.
