Luis Carabantes is a Lecturer in Academic and Professional Communication at the Language Centre of Queen Mary University of London, affiliated with the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from University College London (UCL) and an MA in ELT and Applied Linguistics from King’s College London. His work focuses on the intersection of teacher education and materials development, employing Activity Theory to explore how educators design teaching materials. He teaches modules in the MA in ELT program, including Curriculum Design, Second Language Acquisition, and Materials Evaluation, while also leading academic language courses for undergraduates and postgraduates. As Careers Lead for the School, he promotes professional development integration with academic training.
His research emphasizes sociocultural perspectives in ELT, particularly addressing challenges in materials design and teacher decision-making. Notable publications include studies on learner limitations assumptions and textbook dependency in teacher education, featured in TESOL Quarterly and The Modern Language Journal. He has presented at international conferences such as IATEFL and MATSDA, advocating for innovative materials development practices.
