Luis Ayala

Luis Ayala is a Professor and William A. Fustos Family Chair holder in the John and Willie Leone Department of Energy & Mineral Engineering at Penn State University. He also holds the FCMG Chair in Fluid Behavior and Rock Interactions and was appointed Head of his department in 2024.

• Research focuses on natural gas engineering, unconventional reservoir modeling, and AI applications.
• Current affiliations: College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, Big Ten Academic Alliance, and Society of Petroleum Engineers.

His work advances reservoir simulation through novel fugacity-based models and lattice Boltzmann methods, addressing multiphase flow and gas condensate recovery in heterogeneous systems. Recent publications emphasize boundary-dominated flow, hydraulic fracturing, and Ostwald ripening in porous media.
