Luis Angosto Ferrández is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies and the Department of Anthropology. He holds a PhD from Queen's University of Belfast, an MPhil from University College Cork, and a BA (Licenciatura) from the Universidad de Granada. His research focuses on Latin American politics, economic anthropology, political symbolism, and the intersections of race, ethnicity, and capitalism. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Venezuela and Spain.
Dr. Ferrández's research interests include contemporary capitalism, collective action, indigenous rights, and the role of political symbols in social instability. His recent projects explore rent-capture mechanisms in Venezuela and perceptions of race among visually impaired populations. He teaches courses on race, citizenship, and Latin American geopolitics.
His publications include Venezuela Reframed (2015), co-edited volumes like Anthropologies of Value (2016) and Symbolism and Politics (2020), and articles on topics ranging from resource nationalism to census politics. He contributes to media outlets such as ABC News and The Conversation, offering analyses of Venezuelan politics and Latin American social dynamics.
Current research supervision includes Gregoire R ANDIN's project on postcolonial socio-environmental change in Fiji. He has been awarded grants, including the 2016 'Understanding Power, Effecting Change' initiative. His work often bridges anthropological theory with contemporary political and economic challenges in Latin America.
