Luigi Lugiato is a Contract Professor of Electromagnetism at the University of Insubria, Como, Italy since 2011. He previously held Full Professor positions in Quantum Optics (1998-2011), Quantum Electronics (1990-1998), and Atomic Physics (1987-1990) at institutions including University of Insubria, University of Milano, and Turin Polytechnic. His research spans Quantum Optics, Nonlinear Optics, and Statistical Mechanics, focusing on superfluorescence, optical bistability, nonclassical states of radiation, and quantum imaging.
His 15 most recent publications highlight contributions to Quantum Imaging, Nonlinear Optical Systems, and Parametric Processes, with studies on ghost imaging with thermal light, cavity solitons, and quantum entangled images. These works intersect Quantum Information, Photonics, and Laser Physics.
Honors include the Willis E. Lamb Medal (2002), Quantum Electronics and Optics Prize (EPS, 2003), Max Born Award (OSA, 2007), and Fermi Prize (Italian Physical Society, 2008). He is a Life Fellow of the Franklin Institute and member of prestigious societies including Academia Europaea (2011) and Istituto Lombardo (2011).
He has coordinated the European project HIDEAS (2008–present) and managed the Como Research Unit of CNISM (2005–2008). Editorial roles include Associate Editor for European Physical Journal D (1998–present) and advisory positions for Springer Series on Synergetics (1999–2007).
