Luigi Ambrosio is a distinguished mathematician and Professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. He specializes in calculus of variations and partial differential equations, contributing significantly to geometric measure theory and functional analysis. He received his Master's from Scuola Normale di Pisa in 1985 and began his academic career in 1988 at the University of Tor Vergata (Rome II). Since 1997, he has held a prominent position at Scuola Normale di Pisa, mentoring 16 PhD students who now hold professorships globally.
His academic collaborations extend to institutions like the Max Planck Institute (Leipzig), MIT, ETH Zurich, and the Institut Henri Poincaré (Paris). He has strengthened ties between Scuola Normale di Pisa and ENS de Lyon through joint programs, including co-directing Alessio Figalli's thesis with Cédric Villani.
Awardees of the Prix Fermat (2003) and a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei since 2005, Ambrosio has also spoken at the European Congress of Mathematics (2008). His research spans theoretical mathematics with practical implications in differential equations and geometric analysis.
