Ludvig Norman is Associate Professor (Docent) of Political Science at Stockholm University and Senior Fellow at the UC Berkeley Institute of European Studies. He serves as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University, where he currently heads the MA programs in Political Science and is convener of both the BA and MA courses in qualitative research methods. His academic work focuses on European politics, democratic responses to populism and extremism, regulation of social media platforms, and the institutions of the European Union.
Norman earned his PhD at Uppsala University and held a post-doc position at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs before joining Stockholm University. His academic journey includes being a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley's Institute of European Studies from 2016-2017, where he is currently recognized as a Senior Fellow.
Norman's research interests span multiple interconnected domains of political science. He investigates how democratic institutions respond to challenges from populism and extremism, with particular attention to the European context. His work on the European Union examines both its institutional architecture and democratic legitimacy. A significant portion of his recent research focuses on the regulation of social media platforms and their impact on democratic discourse. Methodologically, Norman specializes in qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to social scientific research, particularly interpretive process tracing for causal explanation in complex political phenomena. His current research includes a major project on social media regulation funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.
Norman's scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on democratic resilience, institutional conflict, and responses to political extremism. His publications demonstrate expertise in both theoretical and empirical aspects of European politics, with recurring themes of democratic fragility, institutional design, and the challenges posed by populist movements. His work bridges historical analysis (particularly regarding Weimar Germany) with contemporary political challenges, creating a rich interdisciplinary perspective on democratic governance.
