Lucy van de Wiel is a Lecturer and Postgraduate Research Director in Global Health & Social Medicine at King’s College London, affiliated with the School of Global Affairs and the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine. She chairs the Reproduction Research Cluster at King’s, focusing on reproductive technologies such as egg freezing, IVF, and telemedical abortion. Her work critically examines the financialization and datafication of fertility, exploring how technologies reshape reproductive healthcare and gender politics.
Her research interests include the commercialization of IVF add-ons, the ethics of reproductive imaging, and the societal implications of menopause medicalization. She has published extensively on egg freezing, including her Open Access monograph Freezing Fertility, which inspired a feature documentary. She supervises PhD students across institutions like King’s and Cambridge, focusing on topics like fertility benefits and queer reproduction.
Key research groups include the Reproduction Research Group (examining social dimensions of reproduction) and Queer@King’s (gender/sexuality studies). Her recent work addresses post-Roe abortion access and corporate influences on reproductive medicine.
