Dr. Lucy Willmott is a Teaching Associate at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge. With a career spanning both academic and operational roles, she has worked in forensic settings including HM Prison Service and Ashworth Secure Hospital, focusing on the intersection of psychology, criminology, and criminal justice systems.
- Education: Joint Honours in Psychology and Sociology (University of Wales, Bangor, 1995)
- Postgraduate: MA in Criminology and Research Methodology (Bangor), PhD in Criminology (focused on personality disorder units)
Her research examines:
- Care, custody, and control dynamics in secure psychiatric hospitals
- Legitimacy and order in prison environments
- Staff-patient/prisoner relationships
- Development of facilities for personality disorder patients
- Risk assessment and treatment programs for offenders
Dr. Willmott has pioneered immersive ethnographic studies through her 18-month fieldwork at Ashworth Hospital and 3-year role at HMP Whitemoor, where she conducted risk assessments and supervised University of Birmingham students.
She has taught at:

Current teaching focuses on the Diploma and MSt in Applied Criminology, with a growing interest in probation systems.
