Dr. Lucy O’Sullivan is an Assistant Professor in Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham. She holds a DPhil in Modern and Medieval Languages from the University of Oxford, following a BA in Spanish and Italian from Trinity College Dublin and an MA in Hispanic Studies from University College London. Prior to Birmingham, she taught at the University of Warwick and the University of Oxford.
Her research focuses on Mexican visual culture, particularly post-revolutionary periods, exploring the interplay between art, politics, and violence. Her first book examines representations of the body in Diego Rivera’s murals and Juan Rulfo’s literature, while her current project investigates images’ roles in Mexico’s religious conflicts during the Cristero War (1926–1929) and the Sinarquista movement. She curated a digital exhibition on Cristero War photography in collaboration with Mexico’s Archivo General de la Nación.
Her teaching includes modules on Spanish Caribbean and Latinx visual culture, with supervision on topics like muralism, street art, and image-text relations. She is active in organizations such as the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland (AHGBI) and the Latin American Studies Association (LASA).
