Lucy Gates is a Lecturer in Medical Technology & Design and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the MRC LEU. Her work focuses on global musculoskeletal health, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and Nepal. She leads the vertebral imaging analysis component of the Wellcome Trust-funded Fractures-E3 study, addressing fracture epidemiology and healthcare systems. She co-leads interdisciplinary initiatives to improve assistive device access in low-resource settings and advocates for researcher welfare through the Concordat for Researcher Development. Research interests include global musculoskeletal health, vertebral fracture epidemiology, and osteoarthritis. Current projects involve Nepal and The Gambia, focusing on lower limb conditions and healthcare infrastructure. Awards include being shortlisted for the ISPO World Congress 2025 Best Paper Prize. She supervises MPhil/PhD student Paul Harradine.
Key contributions include advancing sustainable prosthetics service models in Cambodia, co-designing mobility devices, and enhancing global health research collaboration. She has also contributed to institutional policies on researcher development, including the HR Excellence in Research award process.
