Her research interests span Victorian history, gender studies, home studies, class dynamics, and religious practices, with particular attention to how domestic space functioned within social reform movements. She has a secondary interest in lived religion, especially within working-class households. Matthews-Jones has published extensively in leading journals including 'Victorian Studies', 'Journal of Victorian Culture', 'Women's History', and 'Cultural and Social History', as well as in edited collections on masculinity and home history.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the British settlement movement, gender dynamics in Victorian society, and religious practices within domestic settings. The trend shows increasing attention to material culture and spatial analysis in understanding Victorian social relations, with particular emphasis on how home spaces were negotiated across class boundaries. Her work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary discussions about social housing, community building, and the role of domestic space in social reform.
