Univ.-Prof. Dr. Lucile Dreidemy, MA has held the Chair of Contemporary History (Austrian Contemporary History since 1918 in an International Context) at the University of Vienna since October 2024. She completed her habilitation in Contemporary History in March 2024 and previously served as Associate Professor at Université Toulouse II and as Senior Lecturer at the University of Vienna’s Institute for Contemporary History.
Education:
- 2005–2007 Master’s in German Studies, Université de Strasbourg (specialisation Contemporary & Intellectual History)
- 2007–2012 Joint PhD in German Studies & History, Université de Strasbourg & University of Vienna (cotutelle, passed “with distinction”)
- 2008 Agrégation externe (highest French teaching qualification), German Studies, rank 6/303
Research interests span Austrian political history in the long 20th century, European dictatorships and democratic transitions, Austria’s Cold-War neutrality, colonial entanglements, humanitarianism and development policy, transnational political networks, social-democratic internationalism, social movements, biography & myth, and public history.
She currently leads the international project “Tackling empire: imperial legacies and the colonial in Austria and Hungary, 1918–1944” (2025-2028) and is co-editing the volume Voices of Anticolonialism: A Global Historical Collection 1615-1917 (Mandelbaum, 2025). She is a member of the editorial boards of zeitgeschichte and Austriaca and co-initiator of the Vienna New Cold War Studies research group.
Since 2023 she serves on the University of Vienna works council for academic staff.
