Lucien van Keulen

Lucien van Keulen is a Researcher in Bacteriology, Host Pathogen Interaction & Diagnostics at Wageningen University & Research. He has been actively conducting research since at least 2008, with current projects extending through 2025. His work focuses on infectious diseases with particular emphasis on zoonotic pathogens and their impact on both animal and human health.

Dr. van Keulen's research interests span several critical areas in infectious disease research:

• Prion diseases including Scrapie and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)
• Rift Valley Fever virus and related zoonotic viral diseases
• Bacterial pathogens including Mycobacterium bovis and Chlamydiae
• Host-pathogen interactions in veterinary and human contexts
• Vaccine development and immunogenicity studies
• Diagnostic approaches for infectious diseases

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the molecular characterization of pathogens, zoonotic transmission events, and the development of countermeasures against emerging infectious diseases. His work often bridges veterinary and human health perspectives, reflecting a One Health approach to infectious disease research, with particular attention to prion strain characterization, Rift Valley Fever virus pathogenesis, and zoonotic tuberculosis transmission.

Dr. van Keulen has received media attention for his expertise on BSE (mad cow disease), providing expert commentary in Dutch media in 2022 and 2023, demonstrating his role as a scientific authority in his field.

As project leader, he has secured significant research funding including the long-term TSE's project (2008-2025), multiple Q-fever projects examining infection in goats, and research on BSE in sheep. His research has resulted in 92 documented research outputs including articles, datasets, and conference contributions.

Dr. van Keulen collaborates extensively with researchers across Wageningen University & Research and with international partners, as evidenced by his diverse publication record spanning veterinary medicine, microbiology, immunology, and human infectious diseases.
