Lucia Carvelli, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Neuroscience at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and an Investigator at the FAU Brain Institute. She also holds a secondary appointment as an Associate Professor in Biomedical Science at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of amphetamine action at dopaminergic synapses, with a particular emphasis on long-term and transgenerational effects of embryonal exposure to amphetamine and cocaine.
Dr. Carvelli earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology from the Institute of Pharmacological Research Mario Negri in Milan, Italy, in 1999. She completed postdoctoral training in molecular neuropharmacology at the University of Texas in San Antonio and membrane physiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, followed by further studies at Vanderbilt University Medical School where she examined dopamine transporter regulation by synaptic proteins in C. elegans.
Her scholarly work explores the epigenetic mechanisms of amphetamine, dopamine signaling pathways, and transgenerational epigenetic modifications using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism. Notably, her research has been funded by the NIH R01 (DA042156) grant, which aims to characterize the long-term and transgenerational effects of chronic amphetamine exposure during early development.
Dr. Carvelli has received numerous honors, including the Alfredo Leonardi Award for Best PhD Student in 1999, and has held councilor positions in the International Transmembrane Transporter Society and Catecholamine Society. She has also served on study sections for the National Institute of Health, including the Avenir Program for Genetics or Epigenetics of Substance Use Disorders in 2017 and the Neurotransporters, Receptors and Calcium Signaling Study Section since 2018.
