Luca Veltri

Associate Professor Luca Veltri has been with the University of Parma since 2002 and currently holds the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering and Architecture. He also serves as Director of the Parma Node of the National Cybersecurity Laboratory of CINI and is a member of the Department’s Quality Assurance Committee. His research and teaching revolve around cybersecurity, the Internet of Things, and network protocols.

Research Interests

Prof. Veltri’s current investigations focus on three main pillars:

• Cybersecurity: developing threat-detection algorithms and secure architectures for constrained IoT devices;
• Internet of Things: integrating heterogeneous protocols (LoRaWAN, MQTT, CoAP) and enabling trustworthy, large-scale deployments;
• Network Protocols & Systems: designing lightweight, privacy-preserving communication stacks and blockchain-based security frameworks.

He complements theoretical work with the release of open-source tools such as mjSIP (VoIP library), NEMO (network emulator), and ZWT (cross-platform GUI framework).

Recent Publication Trends

Over the past five years his scholarly output has gravitated toward machine-learning-driven anomaly detection in medical IoT environments, blockchain solutions for privacy and integrity in location-based services, and secure interoperability between LoRaWAN and other IoT ecosystems. These works blend rigorous algorithmic contributions with real-world validation, appearing in top-tier journals and conferences as well as IETF drafts.

Labs & Teams

He currently leads the Parma Node of the National Cybersecurity Laboratory (CINI), coordinating multi-site efforts on IoT and network security. Previously he directed the UniPR Co-Lab Interdepartmental Center (2014–2017) and served as Rector’s Delegate for University Networks and Telephony (2015–2017), overseeing the campus network infrastructure and security posture.
