Dr. Luca Lambertini is a Researcher in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he works in the Environmental Health Lab. His research focuses on identifying and characterizing biomarkers of improper fetal development that lead to chronic and developmental disorders in children.
Dr. Lambertini's research spans seven main areas:
- Genomic Imprinting - studying allele-specific expression in human placenta using allele-specific PCR to measure loss of imprinting
- Long non-coding RNAs - identifying placental lncRNAs and monitoring their expression in fetal growth
- Mitochondrial DNA Methylation - deep sequencing placental mtDNA to identify methylation patterns in growth-restricted pregnancies
- Windows of Susceptibility - investigating how environmental exposures affect epigenetic programming during critical developmental periods
- PCOS Model - studying epigenetic dysregulation in PCOS pregnancies and child outcomes
- Mount Sinai Pregnancy Biobank - leading this initiative to collect placental tissue and cord blood for research
- National Children's Study - participating in this large-scale longitudinal study
His recent publications demonstrate interdisciplinary work spanning urology, endocrinology, and regenerative medicine, with a common thread of investigating molecular mechanisms underlying developmental processes and disease pathogenesis. Dr. Lambertini has developed a patent for a new placenta sampling tool and collaborates extensively with clinical researchers across departments.
Dr. Lambertini maintains laboratory space in the Atran Berg Laboratory Building on both the 3rd and 5th floors. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, focusing on how early developmental experiences shape lifelong health trajectories through epigenetic mechanisms.
