Luca Ferraris

Luca Ferraris is an Associate Professor in the Department of Energy (DENERG) at the Polytechnic University of Turin, where he has been employed since 2005. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the same university, earned with top honors in 1992. He currently teaches Electrical Machines in both Italian and English and has held key organizational roles, including responsibility for teaching and research activities at the Alessandria campus. He also served as teaching director for a regional apprenticeship master’s program in industrial automation.

Research Interests:

• Additive manufacturing for ferromagnetic materials
• Bonded magnets and permanent magnet machines
• Electric and induction motors, especially axial flux and reluctance machines
• Recycling of rare earth magnets
• Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
• Energy efficiency and renewable energy systems
• Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC) and innovative materials

His recent publications focus heavily on advanced manufacturing techniques for electric machines, particularly using additive processes and nanocoated materials. There is a strong trend toward sustainable technologies, including magnet recycling and energy-efficient motor design. His work bridges materials science, electromagnetic modeling, and industrial applications.

Luca Ferraris leads the PEEMD research group within DENERG and has directed over 50 industrial consultancy projects, particularly in electromagnetic compatibility and environmental impact assessment. His work combines academic research with direct industrial application, especially in motor design, smart materials, and sustainable energy technologies.
