معرفی
Luca Catalano is an Associate Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where he leads the Dynamic Molecular Materials (DynaMoMat) Laboratory. His research focuses on molecular crystalline materials and their dynamic properties with applications spanning from organic electronics and optoelectronics to pharmaceuticals. He employs structural and spectroscopic characterization techniques to uncover the subtle connections between structure, properties, and dynamics in crystalline systems.
Dr. Catalano received his Bachelor's in Chemistry from the University of Milan (2011), his MS in Photochemistry and Molecular Materials from the University of Bologna under Professor Dario Braga (2013), and his PhD in supramolecular chemistry from the Polytechnic University of Milan under Professor Pierangelo Metrangolo (2017). Prior to his current position, he completed postdoctoral research at New York University Abu Dhabi with Professor Panče Naumov and at the University of Liverpool with Professor Andy Cooper.
His research interests encompass molecular crystalline materials, organic semiconductors, crystal engineering, terahertz spectroscopy, lattice dynamics, and halogen bonding. Dr. Catalano's work bridges fundamental crystallography with practical applications in organic electronics, photonics, and biotechnology. His laboratory investigates how molecular-scale dynamics affect macroscopic material properties, particularly in organic crystalline systems.
Analysis of Dr. Catalano's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the dynamic properties of molecular crystals, examining how lattice vibrations and molecular motion influence material properties. His work spans from fundamental studies of intermolecular forces to applied research on organic semiconductors, optical waveguides, and stimuli-responsive materials. A recurring theme is the use of terahertz spectroscopy to probe low-frequency lattice dynamics that govern material behavior.
Dr. Catalano teaches courses including Structural Biology, Crystal Engineering of Materials for Biotechnology, General Chemistry, and Polymeric Materials in Biotechnology, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of his research program that bridges chemistry, physics, and life sciences.
He leads the Dynamic Molecular Materials Laboratory, which brings together researchers from multiple disciplines to investigate the dynamic behavior of molecular crystalline systems. The laboratory's work has implications for the design of next-generation organic electronic devices, optical components, and responsive materials with applications in energy conversion, sensing, and biomedical technologies.
