Lu Seegers is a Private Lecturer (Privatdozentin) in the Department of History at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities. She also serves as an associate research fellow at the Research Center for Contemporary History in Hamburg (FZH) and as managing director of the Schaumburger Landschaft. Her academic career spans multiple prestigious institutions in Germany and internationally.
Dr. Seegers completed her Magister in History and Political Science at Leibniz Universität Hannover (1987-1994), earned her doctorate in 2000 with a dissertation on radio programming and family, and completed her Habilitation in 2011 with a study on fatherlessness in 20th century Germany and Poland.
Her research focuses on city history, media history, gender history, experience history and oral history, and cultures of remembrance in the 20th century. Dr. Seegers approaches historical questions through interdisciplinary lenses, particularly examining how societal structures, cultural practices, and individual experiences intersect in German history.
Dr. Seegers' publications reveal a consistent focus on generational experiences, particularly how war and dictatorship shape family structures and social relations. Her work often employs comparative approaches, especially between Germany and Poland, and utilizes oral history methodologies to recover marginalized perspectives.

Dr. Seegers has contributed to numerous research projects examining 20th century German history, with particular focus on the intersections of family, gender, and social structures. Her current research examines Walther von Hollander, a popular advisor for marriage, family, and sexuality throughout the 20th century, analyzing how self-help discourse reflected and shaped societal norms across political regimes.
As managing director of the Schaumburger Landschaft, Dr. Seegers leads a regional historical organization focused on preserving and interpreting the history of the Schaumburg region. She also collaborates with the Research Center for Contemporary History in Hamburg on various projects examining 20th century German history.
