Dr. Lu-Kwang Ju is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering at the University of Akron's College of Engineering and Polymer Science. He served as Department Chair from 2005 to 2013 and holds a Fellow status in the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). His expertise spans bioprocess engineering, microbial technology, and corrosion science.
Education: Ph.D. (1988), M.S. (1985) in Chemical Engineering from SUNY Buffalo; B.S. (1980) in Chemical Engineering from National Taiwan University. Prior to UA, he worked at Biochem Technology as a senior research engineer.
Research focuses on biocatalyst development (e.g., fungal spores for self-healing concrete), biosurfactants (rhamnolipids), soy-based biorefinery systems, and corrosion mechanisms. Key innovations include enzyme-based soy processing methods, microbial concretes, and algal biomass utilization from wastewater.
Notable contributions include over 100 patents/papers on bio-based materials, corrosion mitigation, and sustainable bioprocessing. His work integrates biotechnology with engineering to address environmental challenges.
