Loy Lising is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University and a Senior Fellow with the Higher Education Academy. She is also a member of the International Advisory Panel for the Migration Linguistics Unit at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. Previously, she served as Program Director for the Master of Crosscultural Communication program at the University of Sydney.
Her research focuses on multilingualism and social participation, examining sociolinguistic factors influencing heritage language maintenance, language barriers faced by migrants, and linguistic influences between migrant and dominant languages. She employs corpus and ethnographic methods in diasporic and homeland contexts. Notable projects include studying Filipino families’ multilingual practices and Philippine English in the Australian workforce.
Awards include the Andrew Gonzalez Distinguished Professorial Chair (2015), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2024), and a High Distinction for her PhD (2004). Her work intersects with migration policies, education, and health, advocating for inclusive multilingualism.
Her contributions span academic collaboration, policy submissions, and media engagements on topics like heritage language retention and workplace language challenges. She leads projects funded by organizations such as the Australian Research Council and the Linguistic Society of the Philippines.
