Lourdes Betanzos is a Professor of Spanish at Auburn University, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts. She holds a PhD from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville and specializes in Cuban and Mexican theater of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her research explores themes such as migration, censorship, and therapeutic applications of theater, with a focus on contemporary Latin American dramaturgy.
Her work analyzes plays through intertextual, historical, and socio-political lenses, including studies on authors like José Corrales, Virgilio Piñera, and Guillermo Schmidhuber. Key areas of investigation include border migration narratives, sexual politics under dictatorship regimes, and the interplay between myth and existential disillusionment in modern theater.
Betanzos has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, with notable contributions to LIT Ibéricas, Investigación teatral, and MIFLC Review. Her monographs include critical editions of José Cid Pérez’s work and explorations of Guillermo Schmidhuber’s dramaturgy. She actively participates in academic outreach through Auburn’s Department of Spanish and collaborates with international theater scholars.
