Louise Ryan is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Sheffield, where she has held this position since 2016. She is also the Director of the Global Diversities and Inequalities Research Centre (previously affiliated with London Metropolitan University) and chairs the Research Ethics Committee in the School of Social Sciences and Professions. Ryan holds a graduate degree from University College Cork and has been recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences since 2015.
Her research focuses on migration, social networks, gender, and religion, with a particular emphasis on intra-EU migration, skilled migrants, and the socio-economic impacts of migration policies. She has led major projects funded by the ESRC and European Commission, including studies on early school leaving and sustainable care systems. Ryan is an editorial board member for Sociology, International Migration, and the Irish Journal of Sociology, and serves on the ESRC Grant Assessment Panel.
Her recent work examines Brexit’s implications for EU citizens in the UK, transnational family dynamics, and the ethical dimensions of social network analysis. Ryan has published widely on topics such as migrant integration, labor market participation, and the role of social networks in migration trajectories.
Ryan’s awards include the prestigious Academy of Social Sciences Fellowship. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on projects addressing aging, care work, and policy responses to migration challenges. Her work bridges empirical research with policy advocacy, emphasizing the need for evidence-based approaches to migration governance.
