Louisa Smith

Louisa Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Northeastern University's Bouvé College of Health Sciences and affiliate faculty at the Roux Institute. Her research focuses on developing and applying causal inference methods to observational data in public health research, with special emphasis on pregnancy and birth outcomes. She utilizes real-world data from sources such as electronic health records and insurance claims to generate evidence about population health.

Dr. Smith teaches courses on epidemiologic and biostatistical methods as part of the MS in Real-World Evidence program. Her methodological research addresses selection bias, multiple bias sensitivity analysis, and causal inference in observational studies.

Her applied research examines medication safety in older adults, perinatal outcomes, and healthcare disparities. Current projects investigate benzodiazepine safety post-stroke, pregnancy outcomes using All of Us data, and healthcare access disparities among sexual and gender minority populations.
