Louisa Heiny is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a Professor at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law. She teaches Evidence, Civil Procedure, Judicial Process, and legal writing courses, and advises in the Academic Support Program. Her roles include overseeing academic affairs and contributing to pandemic-era Diploma Privilege licensing. She holds a JD from the University of Colorado Law School, where she was an Order of the Coif member, and previously served as a Legal Writing Professor at the University of Colorado Law School (2003–2009). Her research focuses on evidence law, criminal law, and judicial processes, reflected in publications like Miranda v. Arizona: Five Words That Changed America and articles on Utah evidence rules.
Heiny has received multiple teaching awards, including the Peter J. Billings Excellence in Teaching Award (2015, 2019) and Outstanding Faculty Award (2016–2019). Her professional service includes roles on the Utah Supreme Court Attorney Licensing Task Force and the Utah Bar Association’s Innovation in Law Practice Committee. She has also contributed to legal reform efforts through scholarship and advocacy.
Her educational background includes a BA in English (Magna Cum Laude) and a JD from the University of Colorado. Post-graduation, she clerked for Chief Judge Lewis T. Babcock and practiced as a Deputy District Attorney in Denver.
