Louis Whitcomb is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), with a secondary appointment in Computer Science. He leads the Dynamical Systems and Control Laboratory (DSCL) and previously directed the JHU Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (LCSR). His work focuses on robotics for extreme environments, medical robotics, and underwater vehicles like the Nereus and Nereid Under-Ice (NUI). He holds 15 patents and has received numerous awards, including IEEE Fellow status and multiple teaching honors. Whitcomb’s research integrates control systems, actuator design, and sensor calibration, with applications in oceanography, surgery, and space exploration.
Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering (Yale, 1984), MS/MPhil/PhD in Electrical Engineering (Yale, 1988-1992). Professional roles include past chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department and director of the MS in Robotics program. He collaborates with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and advises on federal research grants. Key projects include Arctic under-ice operations and MRI-guided robotic surgery systems.
Research Interests: Underwater robotics, adaptive control systems, medical device actuation, and teleoperation interfaces. Notable achievements include the NUI’s Arctic missions and innovations in Doppler navigation systems. Whitcomb’s work bridges theoretical control models with real-world applications, emphasizing precision and reliability in challenging environments.
Scientific Awards: Over 25 best-paper awards, NSF CAREER Award, ONR Young Investigator Award, and multiple teaching accolades at JHU. His contributions span robotics conferences and editorial roles for leading journals.
Grants and Advising: Whitcomb has secured major grants from NSF, ONR, and NOAA. His lab trains students in robotics, control systems, and ocean engineering. Current research explores cooperative navigation, high-latency teleoperation, and medical robotics.
Labs/Teams: Director of DSCL and deputy director of LCSR. Collaborates with WHOI on underwater vehicle development and NASA on space teleoperation systems. His teams design robots for oceanographic, surgical, and industrial applications.
