Louis M Carastro is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Tampa's College of Natural and Health Sciences, where he has been a faculty member since 2006. He also holds an affiliate appointment at the Moffitt Cancer Center since 2007, with academic expertise spanning biochemistry, molecular biology, and molecular oncology.
His educational background includes:
- 1989: A.A., Hillsborough Community College
- 1994: B.S., University of Tampa
- 2001: Ph.D., University of Miami School of Medicine
- 2002-2004: Postdoctoral fellowships at Salk Institute, Moffitt Cancer Research Institute, and Penn State University College of Medicine
Carastro's research centers on prostate cancer mechanisms, focusing on tumor suppressor genes (particularly p73), epigenetic regulation via CpG methylation, and chemopreventive strategies using green tea extract. His laboratory develops advanced detection methodologies through LC-MS/MS for protein isoform quantification.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Outstanding Undergraduate Student Research Supervision Award (2016, UT)
- Grant of the Year (2015, UT)
- ASBMB Educational Fellow (2015)
- AACR Edward A. Smuckler Memorial Pathobiology of Cancer Workshop (2003)
- Alpha Epsilon Lambda Honor Society (1999)
- Life Science Award (1992, UT)
Carastro has secured National Cancer Institute funding for vitamin D receptor research and mentors undergraduate researchers through active projects investigating green tea's chemopreventive effects, p73 epigenetic regulation, and novel tumor suppressor detection systems. His laboratory maintains strong affiliations with Moffitt Cancer Center and emphasizes translational cancer research.
