Louis A. Derry is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Engineering since 1996. He is also a Senior Scientist at the Kohala Center, Hawaii, and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. His research focuses on biogeochemical processes across time scales, integrating field observations with geochemical modeling to understand Earth's environmental systems.
- Education:
- B.A. in Geology, Colorado College (1981)
- Ph.D. in Geological Sciences, Harvard University (1990)
His research interests include elemental cycling in soil-plant-water systems, atmospheric deposition effects, and long-term CO₂ fluxes in mountain systems like the Himalayas. He develops models to interpret isotopic variations (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, strontium) in ancient oceans, linking them to major evolutionary and extinction events.
Recent work highlights temperature dependencies in basalt weathering and Proterozoic anoxia causes. His publications span journals like Water Resources Research and Earth and Planetary Science Letters.
- Awards:
- GSA Fellow (2020)
- Mccormick Advising Award (2009)
- Top 1% most-cited geoscientist (2000)
Teaching emphasizes integrating quantitative methods with field and lab data to deepen understanding of biogeochemical systems. He has led undergraduate field programs in the EES program and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams like the Jemez River Basin Critical Zone Observatory.
