Dr. Louella Matsunaga is a Research Associate (unpaid affiliate) at Oxford Brookes University's School of Law and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD, MA, and BSc (Hons) and conducts anthropological research through the Europe Japan Research Centre. Her work focuses on contemporary Japanese society with interdisciplinary approaches spanning religious, medical, and cultural anthropology.
Research Focus: Her current project 'Exploring Global Jodo Shinshu Through Ritual Practice' examines globalization impacts on Shin Buddhism. Previous work includes studies on Japanese workplace gender dynamics, new religious movements, cross-cultural death investigation practices, and anthropological branding studies. Primary thematic interests include ritual embodiment, cultural adaptation, and social perceptions of death.
Publication Trends: Recent articles analyze religious transformation in diasporic communities (2022) and sociocultural narratives surrounding the human body in Japan (2016), demonstrating consistent focus on ritual practice and cultural embodiment through ethnographic methodologies.
