Lorraine Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Performance at Teesside University’s School of Arts & Creative Industries. She has held leadership roles including course leader for BA Dance, BA Performing Arts, and MA Professional Dance Practice, and currently co-leads the BA Film & Television Production program. Her work bridges performance, education, and community engagement.
Her academic background includes a 1st Class Degree in Dance Studies from the University of Chichester, an MA in Choreography from Trinity Laban, and a PGCHE from Teesside University.
Lorraine’s research centers on the role of costume in performance as a somatic and pedagogical tool, exploring identity, 'otherness,' and immersive experiences. She investigates interactive performance, audience-performer dynamics, and the integration of movement, music, lighting, and costume. Her work is deeply informed by feminist and inclusive practices.
Her recent publications and projects, such as the PING Trilogy and You Can Take Me Home Toni, reflect a strong focus on costume performance, wearable sculpture, and community-based art. Themes across her work include embodiment, experimental collaboration, and the invisible labor of performers.

Lorraine actively supervises and collaborates with students, integrating them into research and conference presentations. She has secured external funding from bodies like the AHRC and Arts Council England. Her current projects include cross-school collaborations exploring costume for health and wellbeing, involving Occupational Therapy, Psychology, and Computing. She leads creative teams in developing technology-infused, participatory performances across the Tees Valley.
Lorraine co-founded the Feminist Women's Institute and was artistic director of Silversmith Dance Theatre. She has performed internationally and worked with organizations like Siobhan Davies Dance and Playgrounds Dance Company. She continues to expand her artistic practice through commissions and international exhibitions.
