Dr. Lorna Culverwell is a researcher at the University of Helsinki's Biological stations Viral Zoonosis Research Unit, where she conducts cutting-edge research on mosquito biology and associated RNA viruses. With a doctoral dissertation completed in 2022 titled 'Mosquitoes and mosquito-associated RNA viruses of Finland,' she has established herself as a leading expert on Finnish mosquito species and their virological significance. Her work bridges entomology, virology, and public health, with a particular focus on zoonotic disease transmission.
Dr. Culverwell's research primarily focuses on the identification and characterization of mosquito species in Finland and the RNA viruses they carry. Her work has documented the expansion of mosquito species like Culex modestus into new regions of Finland, with significant implications for public health. She has characterized the RNA virome of multiple Ochlerotatus species and identified that mosquitoes spread three viral diseases in Finland. Her research combines field collection, genomic analysis, and ecological assessment to understand vector-borne disease risks in a changing climate.
Her publication record shows consistent output since 2012, with 22 publications to date including significant contributions in journals like Science, Journal of General Virology, and Viruses-Basel.
