Loren Williams is a Professor at the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Institute of Technology. He leads the Williams Lab, focusing on RNA/DNA folding, ribosome origins, and chemical evolution. He is Director of the NASA-funded Center for the Origins of Life (COOL) and former Director of the RiboEvo Center.
Education:
- B.Sc. in Chemistry, University of Washington (1981)
- Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, Duke University (1985)
- NIH Postdoctoral Fellow under Alex Rich, MIT Biology Department (1988-1992)
Research Interests center on reconstructing ancient ribosomal structures through phylogeny, evolutionary theory, biophysics, and bioinformatics. He explores how sequence, covalent damage, anti-cancer drugs, and proteins modulate RNA/DNA folding. His work bridges early Earth environments with life’s emergence, emphasizing water’s role and metal ion interactions.
Article Trends (2018-2025): Interdisciplinary focus on ribosome evolution (e.g., Asgard archaea, LUCA), prebiotic chemistry (depsipeptides, thioesters), and molecular interactions (RNA-metal, G-quadruplexes). Recurring themes include combinatorial chemical systems, evolutionary modeling, and astrobiological implications.
Scientific Awards:
- NSF CAREER Award (1995-1998)
- Sigma Xi Best Paper (1997)
- Petit Institute "Above and Beyond" Awards (2012, 2021)
- Georgia Tech Faculty Mentor Awards (2013, 2022)
- AAAS and ISSOL Fellowships
- Vasser Woolley Instruction Award (2019)
Advising & Grants: Mentored students like Chiaolong Hsiao (Sigma Xi Best Thesis 2009). Leads NASA-funded initiatives (COOL, PCE3) and explores SARS-CoV-2 testing kit design.
