Loren Terveen is a Professor and Distinguished McKnight University Professor serving as Department Head of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Minnesota's College of Science and Engineering. He co-leads the GroupLens Research Lab and has maintained an active research program while taking on significant leadership responsibilities.
His research focuses on social computing, human-computer interaction, and intelligent systems, with particular emphasis on detecting and addressing bias in intelligent systems, developing ethical research methods for online communities, and integrating human and machine intelligence in peer production systems like Wikipedia. His interface design expertise spans graphical user interfaces, mobile and location-aware systems, and web search and information management.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong trajectory in examining bias in digital spaces, particularly in video conferencing systems and Wikipedia content creation. His work consistently bridges theoretical research with practical applications in collaborative online environments, with increasing attention to ethical considerations in computational systems.

Terveen has advised numerous PhD students across diverse topics within human-computer interaction and social computing. His recent grant activity includes an NSF-funded project with Stevie Chancellor investigating how to integrate new knowledge into Wikipedia while maintaining accuracy, and another NSF grant with Lana Yarosh, Stevie Chancellor, Kangjie Lu, and Joe Konstan focused on ethical research frameworks for online communities. He has served as President of ACM's Special Interest Group on Human-Computer Interaction and chaired major conferences in his field.
As co-leader of the GroupLens Research Lab, Terveen oversees a productive research environment that has generated influential work in recommender systems, social computing, and online communities. The lab continues to produce significant research, as evidenced by multiple papers presented at CSCW 2022 and recognition for work addressing bias in video conferencing systems.
