Lore Vandewalle is a Professor of Economics at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Geneva) and KU Leuven (Belgium), holding the Pictet Chair in Finance and Development. She also serves as an affiliated researcher at J-PAL (Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab) and the Gender Centre. Her primary focus is on applied microeconomics with specializations in development, political economy, and gender policies. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in India, Bangladesh, and Uganda, analyzing financial inclusion, microenterprise dynamics, and the socio-political impacts of public policies.
Education: PhD in Economics from the University of Namur (2011). Prior affiliations include Bocconi University, London School of Economics, and University of Göttingen. She previously held a part-time senior researcher role at the University of Oslo.
Research interests span financial access mechanisms for marginalized groups, political competition’s role in public good provision, and gender disparities in economic participation. Her work often employs experimental methods to evaluate policy interventions, such as cash transfers, childcare programs, and microfinance initiatives.
Key collaborations include J-PAL for randomized controlled trials in development contexts. Her research bridges theoretical frameworks with actionable insights for policymakers, emphasizing intersectional inequalities and structural barriers in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
