Lora Oehlberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary and serves as Interim Associate Dean for Community Engagement and Innovative Partnerships in the Faculty of Science. She holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, with prior degrees from UC Berkeley and Stanford University. Her research focuses on creativity support tools, human-computer interaction (HCI), and computer-supported cooperative work, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration across design, engineering, and healthcare domains.
Dr. Oehlberg directs the iLab, a leading HCI research group, and participates in Ward of the 21st Century (W21C), a healthcare innovation initiative. She supervises students in the Computational Media Design (CMD) program, blending computer science with artistic and architectural disciplines. Her work spans topics like co-design with neurodiverse communities, data physicalization, and ethical algorithmic decision-making.
Notable achievements include Best Paper Honorable Mention at CHI 2018 and IEEE VIS 2018. Her research emphasizes real-world impact through participatory methods and tangible tools, with projects addressing aging populations, autism communities, and sustainable design.
